6 Simple Tips To Write The Perfect YouTube Title
Don't make the mistake of having a great video but a lackluster title.
Before Your Read: I do not write for any of the Youtubers referenced in this article.
A good YouTube title can make or break a video. The sad reality is that you could have an excellent video, but your title is not enticing or juicy enough for people to watch. So here’s a few tips or suggestions to get the viewers you deserve.
Tip 1 - Highlight The Benefits
You will often see videos with a title on how you can make more money, lose weight, become happier, save time etc. However, even if you are not publishing a ‘self help’ video, there might be other benefits that you can highlight.
Below is a video by David Hartley about the story behind Eric Clapton’s song Layla. Although the ‘benefit’ of this video might not seem obvious, the added touch of ‘weirder than you think’ promises us the benefit of more information than you previously knew.
Tip 2- Get Specific
Instead of saying ‘I can make you rich,’ check out this video by Humphrey Yang. There are seven side hustles, they’re realistic, and you can make $1000. He is not promising you the world, but very straightforward and achievable goals.
Tip 3 - Solve Their Problem
If my phone or TV is broken, YouTube is usually the first place I’ll go. I don’t really put much thought into this search and which video I land on. If you have a specific problem that you can solve, make sure to address this in the title.
Check out this video by Modern Millie. Here’s your problem, and here’s how we’re going to solve it.
Tip 4- Spark Their Curiosity (In Three Separate Ways)
This tip is so important, so I’ve divided it into three subsections.
(A) Ask A Question
The easiest way to spark someone’s curiosity is to ask a question. Take this example from History Matters. Instead of writing about the history of Belgium, you ask ‘Why Does Belgium Exist?’
(B) Highlight What’s At Stake
If your video tells a story, then you could mention in your title what’s at stake. This brilliant title by the construction channel B1M has sparked curiosity in two great ways. Firstly, the price tag is $1 billion. Secondly, it’s needed to ‘save California’. The fate of California is what’s at stake.
(C) Says Something Counter-Intuitive
You can also spark curiosity by saying something counterintuitive. Look at this title from Hip Hop Madness. Why would a famous rapper purposely sabotage their career? This is counterintuitive of the fame-hungry perception people have of rappers.
Tip 5 - Tap Into The Emotions
I want you to take a look at two fitness videos, both of which are on how to do pull-ups.
In the first example, this fitness vlogger is telling you that you suck at pullups, and has tapped into the viewer’s insecurities.
On the other side of the spectrum, we have another video about pullups from another great channel, which went the other route of emotional tapping. The title is ‘You Can Do Pull Ups My Friends.’
Instead, of tapping into insecurities, this one taps in the viewers’ sense of optimism. Both sides work well.
Tip 6 - Highlight Your Authority
If you are a qualified expert in the topic for your YouTube video, this will give your voice an authority over others.
Here, the title reads (Health Professional Explains) and just quickly informs us that he knows what he’s talking about.
And even if you are not an authority, you can mention that all of the information is science-based. Check out this video from Ali Abdaal below.
